Beauty of Science Participated in The 5th Art and Science International Exhibition and Symposium
The 5th Art and Science International Exhibition and Symposium (TASIES 2019) opened in the west hall of the National Museum of China from November 3 to 30 in 2019, with more than 120 exhibits from over 20 countries. The theme of this year's exhibition is “AS-Helix: The Integration of Art and Science in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”.
Beauty of science participated in the exhibition with three works: Fairies in the Night Sky, Envisioning Chemistry and THE ARCTIC. Envisioning Chemistry won the “Wu Guanzhong Art & Science Innovation Prize” at this event.
01 Envisioning Chemistry
Envisioning Chemistry is a collaboration project between Beauty of Science and the Chinese Chemical Society. It discovers and reveals the beauty of chemistry on the microscopic level through photography: precipitates in plain colors and varied forms are like fairies floating in the night sky; the fine silver needles glow magnificently, while the dark lead crystals emerge with natural angles: bubbles form and pop, constantly dancing around in crowds and changing like creatures with endless lives... This film presents the stunning scenes of four types of chemical reactions: gas evolution reactions, precipitation reactions, metal displacement reactions, and electrodeposition reactions.
With the new vision, the journey of discovery is beyond limits and the goals of explorations are beyond a single answer.
02 Fairies in the Night Sky
The world of chemistry is full of colors and amazement with all sorts of wonders hidden inside succinct formulae. Thanks to photography, we are able to appreciate the beauty of chemical reactions on the microscopic level and experience the mysterious connections between chemistry and the world where we reside. This work explores forms of precipitate resulted from more than 10 different precipitation reactions. A precipitation reaction refers to the formation of an insoluble solid when two solutions are combined. In these experiments, the precipitate looks as if it has a life of its own: it grows, expands, and come into existence from nothing at all. It has such diversified appearances like fairies in the night sky, inexplicable, mysterious, yet vaguely familiar at the same time.
03 The arctic
THE ARCTIC represents the crystallization processes of various substances, during which we can appreciate the wonders of nature.
In the distance, a silver spark gradually pierces the darkness, revealing an undulating brush of graceful white, as if we have reached the Arctic in search of a stunning frozen landscape. Our imagination is also engaged by the different forms and variations during the crystallization.
